Db2 Troubleshooting

SQLCODE -181 invalid date or time value

SQLCODE -181: invalid date or time value — the value looks like a date but is not a real calendar value.

What it means

  • After every EXEC SQL, DB2 returns a SQLCODE: 0 means success, +100 means no row found, and negative values mean an error.

Common causes

  • February 30th, month 00, and similar impossible values.
  • Bad data from a file.

How to diagnose

  • Show the exact value DB2 rejected.
  • Trace it to the input record.

How to fix it

  • Validate dates before the SQL call.
  • Correct the source data.

Example: Validate calendar values

* Month 01-12, day valid for that month. * Edit checks catch -181 before DB2 does.

Calendar validation belongs in input edits.

Interview tip

  • Q: How would you troubleshoot a SQLCODE -181 invalid date or time value in production?
  • A: I would check the SQLCODE and SQLERRM immediately after the failing statement, reproduce in SPUFI, then apply the specific fix.

Prevention checklist

  • Always check SQLCODE after every EXEC SQL statement.
  • Log the SQLCODE, SQLSTATE and failing statement for support.
