VSAM Troubleshooting

AIX and base cluster become inconsistent

IDCAMS DEFINE problems — cluster creation failing — usually come from bad parameters or catalog issues.

What it means

  • DEFINE CLUSTER creates the catalog entry and allocates space.
  • Parameter mistakes surface immediately at DEFINE time.

Common causes

  • Invalid KEY length/position for KSDS.
  • Space parameters the volume cannot satisfy.
  • Cluster name already exists.
  • Wrong SHAREOPTIONS or attributes.

How to diagnose

  • Read the IDCAMS messages — they name the bad parameter.
  • LISTCAT similar working clusters for reference.
  • Check volume space.

How to fix it

  • Correct the parameters and re-run DEFINE.
  • Delete the old cluster first if replacing.
  • Model new clusters on proven ones.

Example: Model DEFINE on a working cluster

//DEFINE EXEC PGM=IDCAMS //SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=* //SYSIN DD * DEFINE CLUSTER(NAME(APP.CUST.KSDS) - KEYS(9 0) RECSZ(80 80) - CYL(10 5) SHR(2 3)) - DATA(NAME(APP.CUST.KSDS.DATA)) - INDEX(NAME(APP.CUST.KSDS.INDEX)) /*

KEYS(9 0): 9-byte key at position 0.

Interview tip

  • Q: How would you troubleshoot a AIX and base cluster become inconsistent in production?
  • A: I would read the IDCAMS error, compare against a working cluster definition, fix the parameter, and re-run.

Prevention checklist

  • Keep DEFINE jobs in version control.
  • Test DEFINE in a sandbox catalog first.
