DevOps & Modernization Troubleshooting

Zowe CLI login fails

Zowe CLI login fails usually comes down to three things: the profile points at the wrong place, the certificate is not trusted, or Z/OSMF itself is unhappy.

What it means

  • Zowe CLI talks to z/OS through Z/OSMF REST APIs - if Z/OSMF is down or the profile is wrong, every Zowe command fails.
  • Profiles store host, port, user, and credentials; a stale profile silently points at the wrong LPAR.
  • Certificate validation fails when the client does not trust the z/OS certificate chain.

Common causes

  • Profile created against the wrong hostname or port, or an old profile left over after an LPAR move.
  • Password changed while the profile still holds the old one, or a stored token has expired.
  • Self-signed or internal-CA certificate on z/OS not imported into the client trust store.
  • Z/OSMF started task down, or its port not reachable from the client network.
  • User ID lacking authority to the Z/OSMF services being called.
  • Proxy or VPN routing Zowe traffic to the wrong network segment.

How to diagnose

  • Run zowe profiles list and check the profile values for host, port, and user.
  • Open the Z/OSMF URL in a browser - if the browser also fails, the problem is Z/OSMF or the network, not Zowe.
  • Re-run one failing command and read the full error body for the exact HTTP status.
  • Compare the server certificate fingerprint with what the client trusts to confirm a trust problem.
  • Check the Z/OSMF started task log in SYSLOG for startup or SAF errors.

How to fix it

  • Recreate or update the profile with the correct host, port, and credentials.
  • Import the z/OS certificate chain into the client trust store, or switch to token-based login where the site allows it.
  • Start or recycle Z/OSMF and confirm its port answers before retrying Zowe commands.
  • Grant the user ID access to the Z/OSMF resources named in the SAF denial message.

Example: Verify and fix a Zowe profile

zowe profiles list zowe profiles create zosmf prod --host mfprod.example.com --port 443 --user MYUSER --password secret --overwrite zowe zos-files list data-set "SYS1.PROCLIB" --zosmf-profile prod

Recreating the profile with --overwrite clears stale host, port, or credential values in one step; the list command proves it works.

Interview tip

  • Q: Zowe CLI suddenly reports certificate errors for a host that worked last week. Zowe CLI login fails?
  • A: The z/OS certificate was renewed with a certificate the client does not trust yet. I compare the presented fingerprint with the expected one to rule out anything unexpected, then import the new chain into the client trust store. I also record the renewal date so the next rotation is planned, not a surprise.

Prevention checklist

  • Validate Zowe profiles per environment after every LPAR or certificate change.
  • Track z/OSMF certificate expiry dates and renew before they bite.
  • Prefer token-based auth over stored passwords so password changes do not break automation.
  • Smoke-test one Zowe command per environment after any network or security change.
