COBOL Troubleshooting
S0C8 fixed-point overflow
S0C8 is a fixed-point overflow: a binary (COMP) calculation produced a value too large for the field, with no ON SIZE ERROR to catch it.
What it means
- Binary arithmetic overflowed the receiving field.
- Without ON SIZE ERROR, the hardware raises S0C8 instead of letting the program handle it.
Common causes
- Counter or accumulator (PIC 9(4) COMP) exceeding 9999.
- Multiplication of two large binary values into a small result field.
- Loop counter running far beyond its expected maximum.
How to diagnose
- Find the failing statement offset; identify the receiving field and its PIC.
- Check the input volume — overflow often appears only with large production files.
How to fix it
- Enlarge the receiving field (e.g. PIC 9(9) COMP).
- Add ON SIZE ERROR handling to trap overflow gracefully.
Example: Trap overflow with ON SIZE ERROR
ADD WS-QTY TO WS-TOTAL
ON SIZE ERROR
DISPLAY "Overflow on total"
MOVE 16 TO RETURN-CODE
STOP RUN
END-ADD.
ON SIZE ERROR turns a potential S0C8 into handled logic.
Interview tip
- Q: How would you troubleshoot a S0C8 fixed-point overflow in production?
- A: I would find the overflowing statement, check the receiving field size against real data volumes, enlarge it and add ON SIZE ERROR handling.
Prevention checklist
- Size accumulators for peak volumes, not average.
- Use ON SIZE ERROR on risky arithmetic.
