Module 1: Abend Codes
U4038- Language Environment Abend
U4038 is a Language Environment (LE) abend - it means LE hit a condition your program did not handle, so LE terminated the run unit.
What it means
- User abend 4038 (U4038) is issued by Language Environment when an unhandled condition occurs in a COBOL/PL/I/C program.
- LE is the common runtime under COBOL, PL/I, C and Assembler; when a serious condition goes unhandled, LE percolates it and ends the enclave with U4038.
- It is often a wrapper: the real problem (for example bad data causing a data exception) happened first, and LE abended because nobody caught it.
Common causes
- An unhandled condition such as a data exception (S0C7-type condition) inside a COBOL program running under LE.
- Missing or wrong LE runtime options, for example TRAP(OFF) letting hardware conditions escape unhandled.
- STOP RUN coded after a fatal condition with no condition handling in place.
How to find it
- Look in the job output for CEE messages, for example CEE3207S (the LE message for a data exception) - it names the real condition.
- Add a //CEEDUMP DD SYSOUT=* statement to capture the LE dump (CEE3DMP) with the failing statement offset.
- The LE dump traceback shows which program and paragraph were active when the condition hit.
How to fix it
- Fix the underlying condition first - usually bad numeric data or a storage bug, not the U4038 itself.
- Add proper error handling in the program (ON EXCEPTION / invalid-key clauses) so conditions are caught.
- Check the LE runtime options in use (for example CEEOPTS) and make sure they match your shop standards.
Example
- Add this DD to your JCL step to capture the Language Environment dump:-
//STEP1 EXEC PGM=MYCOBPROG //STEPLIB DD DSN=MY.LOADLIB,DISP=SHR //CEEDUMP DD SYSOUT=* //SYSOUT DD SYSOUT=*
- Typical output to look for after a U4038:-
CEE3207S The system detected a data exception (System Completion Code=0C7). From compile unit MYCOBPROG at entry point MYCOBPROG at statement 145 at compile unit offset +000003A2 at entry offset +000003A2 at address 1B4A53A2.
- Read the CEE message (data exception here), find statement 145 in your source, and fix the bad data there.
