Module 5: CICS BMS and Screens

SEND MAP

What SEND MAP does

  • SEND MAP sends data from the program to the terminal screen.
  • BMS merges the program's data (the FROM area of the symbolic map) with the constant data of the physical map.
  • If neither MAPONLY nor DATAONLY is coded, both the variable data and the constants are sent.
  • The MAP name must match the DFHMDI label and the MAPSET name must match the DFHMSD label.

Options

  • MAP: the 1-7 character map name. MAPSET: the mapset name - if omitted, the map name is used. The mapset must be defined in the PPT.
  • FROM: the symbolic map area holding the data - if omitted, the map name with an O suffix is used.
  • MAPONLY: sends only constant data from the physical map; no FROM area is used.
  • DATAONLY: sends only data from the FROM area; constant data from the physical map is not sent.
  • ERASE: erases the whole screen before displaying. ERASEAUP: erases only the unprotected fields.
  • ALARM: sounds the terminal alarm when the map is displayed.
  • CURSOR: positions the cursor - with a value it is a screen displacement; without a value it goes to the first field whose symbolic map length is -1.
  • Example:-
EXEC CICS SEND MAP('MNTMAP1') MAPSET('MNTSET1') FROM(MNTMAP1O) DATAONLY ALARM CURSOR END-EXEC.

When to use MAPONLY, DATAONLY or neither

  • Use neither (the normal case) the first time a map is displayed, so constants and data are painted together.
  • Use MAPONLY when you only want to repaint the fixed text of the physical map without touching data areas.
  • Use DATAONLY to refresh data on a screen that is already displayed - it is faster and does not resend constants.
  • Do not use DATAONLY for the first display of a map: the captions and titles would be missing.
  • Use ERASE when switching to a different map so text from the previous screen does not linger.
