VSAM Troubleshooting

VSAM access path causes slow random reads

General VSAM issues — catalog, sharing, and definition drift — need the cluster definition and the program to agree.

What it means

  • VSAM problems are usually definition mismatches, not VSAM bugs.
  • LISTCAT is the source of truth for what exists.

Common causes

  • Program FD and cluster out of sync.
  • SHAREOPTIONS wrong for the access pattern.
  • Catalog alias resolving to the wrong dataset.
  • AIX out of sync with base cluster.

How to diagnose

  • LISTCAT the cluster and compare with the FD.
  • Check SHAREOPTIONS against batch/online sharing needs.
  • VERIFY the index if corruption is suspected.

How to fix it

  • Realign definitions.
  • Correct SHAREOPTIONS with care (data integrity!).
  • Rebuild AIX paths when inconsistent.

Example: Compare FD with LISTCAT

LISTCAT ENT(APP.CUST.KSDS) ALL *> compare KEYS, RECSZ, SHR with the COBOL FD

LISTCAT ALL shows everything the program must match.

Interview tip

  • Q: How would you troubleshoot a VSAM access path causes slow random reads in production?
  • A: I would pull LISTCAT ALL, compare every attribute with the program FD, and realign whichever side is wrong.

Prevention checklist

  • Keep cluster definitions in version control.
  • Review SHAREOPTIONS for shared files.
