Db2 Troubleshooting

SQLCODE -204 object not defined

SQLCODE -204: object not defined — the table, view or alias does not exist (or you lack authority to see it).

What it means

  • After every EXEC SQL, DB2 returns a SQLCODE: 0 means success, +100 means no row found, and negative values mean an error.

Common causes

  • Wrong table name or qualifier (creator).
  • Object in a different schema/environment.
  • Typo in the table name.

How to diagnose

  • Check the exact name and qualifier in the SQL.
  • Verify the object exists: SELECT from SYSIBM.SYSTABLES.
  • Confirm you are in the right DB2 subsystem.

How to fix it

  • Correct the qualifier — often the creator ID differs between test and production.
  • Create the missing object or grant authority.

Example: Check the qualifier first

-- wrong: SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEE -- right: SELECT * FROM PAYROLL.EMPLOYEE

Most -204s are wrong qualifiers, not missing tables.

Interview tip

  • Q: How would you troubleshoot a SQLCODE -204 object not defined in production?
  • A: I would check the SQLCODE and SQLERRM immediately after the failing statement, reproduce in SPUFI, then apply the specific fix.

Prevention checklist

  • Always check SQLCODE after every EXEC SQL statement.
  • Log the SQLCODE, SQLSTATE and failing statement for support.
