Db2 Troubleshooting

SQLCODE -551 authorization failure

SQLCODE -551: authorization failure — the auth ID lacks the privilege for this operation.

What it means

  • After every EXEC SQL, DB2 returns a SQLCODE: 0 means success, +100 means no row found, and negative values mean an error.

Common causes

  • New program or user without GRANTs.
  • Deployed to an environment where grants were not repeated.
  • Wrong plan owner.

How to diagnose

  • Identify the missing privilege from SQLERRM.
  • Check grants: SELECT from SYSIBM.SYSTABAUTH etc.
  • Confirm the auth ID the program runs under.

How to fix it

  • GRANT the required privilege.
  • Repeat grants in every environment as part of deployment.

Example: Include GRANTs in deployment

GRANT SELECT, INSERT ON PAYROLL.EMP TO PAYAPP; *> grants must exist in each environment

Missing grants are a deployment step, not a code bug.

Interview tip

  • Q: How would you troubleshoot a SQLCODE -551 authorization failure in production?
  • A: I would check the SQLCODE and SQLERRM immediately after the failing statement, reproduce in SPUFI, then apply the specific fix.

Prevention checklist

  • Always check SQLCODE after every EXEC SQL statement.
  • Log the SQLCODE, SQLSTATE and failing statement for support.
